Phentermine Side Effects

Phentermine is a drug that’s not without its controversies. The worst of these came about a number of years ago when the drug received a lot of bad press due to a potentially fatal lung condition it produced when taken in conjunction with fenfluramine. This combination, called “Phen-fen”, was popular and effective, but was also clearly indicted with causing pulmonary hypertension among a statistically significant number of users. Doctors and patients have wised up to the potentially dangerous drug combination and Phen-fen is no longer prescribed. Still, even on its own phentermine can potentially cause a wide range of negative side effects.

Typically, phentermine seems to be fairly well accepted. It may generate side effects consistent with its catecholamine-releasing properties, e.g., tachycardia (increased heart rate) and increased blood pressure, however the occurence and magnitude of these seem to be less than using the amphetamines. Simply because phentermine works through sympathomimetic path ways, the pill may increase blood pressure and heart rate. It could also result in palpitations, trouble sleeping, and sleeping disorders. In addition, phentermine has the potential to cause psychological dependence. Phentermine side effects:

More common phentermine side-effects:

phentermine headacheThe first and most common of these side effects are a number of small complications. Many phentermine users develop dry mouth, or a persistent bad taste in their mouth. In addition many users find that they develop a noticeably increased level of thirst at all times. Interestingly enough, these increased levels of thirst and water intake often correlate with a difficulty urinating. Another related side effect among a number of users is constipation, as well as stomach disturbance, including cramping, vomiting, and the feeling of nausea and diarrhea.

In addition to these physiological symptoms many phentermine users report mood and mental problems. Some of these are relatively mild, while others can be incredibly severe. Some users report regular feelings of confusion and nervousness. These levels of anxiousness can increase to the point of constant irritability and the drug is even known to produce uncontrollable rage within some patients. Phentermine based mental problems can result in problems like clumsiness and vertigo, persistent restlessness and regular bouts of panic.

Some people develop tremors and shaking, impotence or problems with a lowered sex drive. Other users develop serious skin problems like rashes and other serious levels of itching, swelling in various body parts, widespread red blotches, and even hives. In a few cases users have even developed a blue tint to parts of their skin, as well as to their lips.

Mental side effects from taking phentermine can be even more severe. The worst potential mental side effect of phentermine is psychosis, but patients have also developed hallucinations from the drug. Some patients have even suffered from seizures linked to taking the drug.

Should I Avoid Phentermine?

While the above list naturally sounds alarming and is enough to scare away many potential users, it’s important to note a few things. First, most people don’t develop any side effects from taking the drug, and those who do rarely develop serious side effects. Second, phentermine is a controlled substance only available through a doctor’s prescription and under their supervision. Finally, there are plenty of phentermine alternatives on the market that are available for purchase without a prescription and which don’t threaten their users with all of the above side effects. For many patients the side effects of phentermine are a small price to pay for its powerful weight loss effects, but thankfully with phentermine alternatives people can benefit from rapid weight loss without having to roll the dice with their physical and mental health.
